The grip cellular companies have on manufactureres can only tighten; the subsidy system is here to stay. If you want a vision of the future, imagine a boot stamping on cool Asian cellphones that don't come out in the West - forever.

Apple, Cisco extend negotiations on iPhone name [Reuters]
Cisco agrees to give Apple more time to respond to its lawsuit. Cupertino now has until Wednesday, Feb. 21, to strike a deal before the legal wheels must turn. The sticking point may be Cisco's demand for "interoperability" rather than a simple payout, whatever "interoperability" means.
