The LA Times has apparently received a response from the RIAA to Steve Jobs' essay yesterday, in which Jobs laid out three possible avenues for digital music, concluding that the third option -- convincing the major labels to allow their music to be sold without DRM -- was the best. The RIAA response indicates that the labels clearly prefer the second option: Apple licensing its Fairplay DRM to competing online music stores.
I take that to mean that the majors aren't quite ready to give up on the idea of DRM. I've been trying to get responses from major label representatives and from the RIAA today, but so far all I have is an off-the-record statement indicating displeasure with Jobs' piece. RIAA representatives say they are "currently working on getting [me] a statement" to post here, so stay tuned.
