Shane Kim: "PS2-Like Tail" for 360?

Microsoft corporate VP Shane Kim spoke with 1up at DICE about the Xbox business. What I found most interesting is the discussion about how they pulled support so quickly for the original Xbox, and how they imagine the 360 will be different:

With respect to Xbox 360, I'd say that we absolutely believe that we're going to win this generation and we believe it [the Xbox 360] is going to have a very long tail. If we could have a PS2-like tail, that would be awesome for the Xbox 360. I don't think you're going to see the same abrupt move to the next-generation. We'll have a much more balanced approach when the next-generation arrives.

I imagine that we'll see if Microsoft really does win this generation. If PS3 pulls ahead of 360 in the end, Microsoft might again go ahead and scrap the current platform for another brand-new effort. Also see: any console Sega ever made.
