InPhase Technologies announced it's ready to go to market in July with the computer industry's first holographic disc drive, capable of storing 300GB of data on a single disc.
Beta testers have been using the Tapestry HDS-300R drive since December. The drive uses write-once discs that can hold the equivalent of 64 standard DVD discs. InPhase says it expects to have re-writable discs on the market next year and capacities up to 1.6 terabytes witihin three years.
The drive sells for around $18,000, and discs are $180 each.
InPhase, an offshoot of Bell Labs, says it is initially targeting professional video makers and companies with significant corporate archiving needs.
