The study appears to be about whether people find syncopation surprising. I'm not sure why it uses such a familiar rhythm ("Shave and a haircut, two bits," as represented graphically to the right). Maybe that's part of the study. I'm contacting the guy who put it together to see whether he can tell me any more about it.
