When I interviewed Josh Madell, co-owner of the New York record store Other Music about their plans to go online with a DRM-free online music store, one of the most striking things he mentioned appeared right at the end of the interview:
The more I think about this, the more intrigued I become. Aside from the fact that DJ culture has kept vinyl alive in a big way, I think that as people start buying music in a purely digital/portable format, lots of them will simultaneously gravitate towards the analog/stay-at-home version as well. Plus, with the right equipment, you could make digital versions of your vinyl records that would sound better than the CD version does anyway (I'm talking 24-bit/96 kHz and up).
An article in USA Today today indicates that at least started me thinking about this again. At least one record plant is expanding, and as the CD starts to fade, I think we could see others do the same.
