Basaev Died by Subversion, Poison and the Bomb

(((It's amazing how many terrorists die by their own methods.
What's wrong with just arresting them? But, well, the guy is in pieces now. Dope, video and a time-bomb. All in a day's work for modern anti-terror services.)))

FSB DIVULGES DETAILS OF BASAYEV'S DEATH. In what appears to be an attempt to divert attention from damaging allegations of FSB
involvement in the October 2006 killing of Russian journalist Anna
Politkovskaya (see "RFE/RL Newsline," March 26, 2007),

(((Oh come on, this story is interesting on its own merits no matter how many assassinated journalists are tangentially involved)))

"Moskovsky komsomolets" on March 26 published an account of how the FSB
allegedly infiltrated the retinue of radical Chechen field commander
Shamil Basayev and planted the bomb that killed him in July 2006. The paper suggested that an FSB agent succeeded in drugging the driver of a truck in which Basayev planned to transport arms and explosives, after which an entire team of FSB agents photographed the arms in question, and planted a bomb in the truck that detonated early on
July 10 in the Ingushetian village of Ekazhevo, killing Basayev and three other militants (see "RFE/RL Newsline," July 11, 2006). LF

(((Basaev's mujihadeen pal "Khattab" was killed by a poisoned letter, the precursor to a host of poisonings of people in the FSB orbit. If you've got untraceable poison, everything looks poisonable all of a sudden.)))

(((A real-life tale that beggars belief, really... this polyglot freebooter had to be one of the scariest characters in the modern world.
Videcam in one hand, homemade bomb in the other one, oh lordy. I wonder what it was like to meet him in real life.
I bet he was really geeky and spent most of his time talking about stuff like encryption and video formats.)))
