This skipped our attention at the PMA photography trade show last week, but we like freak shows, so here ya go. Sigma announced a telephoto lens that seems to qualify as the biggest ever in several regards.
The Sigma APO 200-500mm F2.8 EX DG, dubbed "Sigzilla" by photo dweebs, not only has an impressive focal length and speed (stops down to f 2.8), it pretty much renders obsolete my "horse's leg" comparison. The thing weighs 35 pounds, has a diameter of 178mm and is the approximate length of a compact European car. It comes with a badly needed carrying handle and its own LCD screen.
Sigma hasn't announced price or availability yet, but camera wags expect it'll come in at a grand or two less than the previous champion, the 13-pound, 300-800mm, $8,000 "Sigmonster."
Note: That strange little blob at the end of the lens is the camera.
