Chipmaker Micron has a pair of new image sensors that should add speed and flexibility to camcorders.

Both are designed for hybrid video cameras that can grab videos in HD quality and capture still images at high resolution.

The MT9P401 captures video at up 60 frames per second and still images at resolution up to 5 megapixels. The MT9M002 has similar specs but adds support for long zoom lenses and image stabilization and shrinks surface area to allow for use in compact camcorders.

Both chips are slated to go into production in the third quarter of
2007, meaning you can expect some sexy new camcorders around CES time.

Micron said it also begun mass production on the MT9E001, an
8-megapixel sensor designed for camcorders and digicams. It grabs HD
video at up to 30 frames per second and can capture full-resolution still images at a speedy 10 frames per second in burst mode.
