Mortal Kombat Movies Starting Over From Scratch

The long-rumored next entry in the Mortal Kombat film franchise won't be a sequel or a prequel, but rather a fresh start a la Batman Begins. If it ever gets made, that is. At the rate the script is being developed, it seems like we'll see a portable Xbox before we see this next Mortal Kombat flick. Here's how a supposed insider on the project, "Rayden" described the problem:

The reason it is taking so long is the script, so many parts are involved. The team at Threshold (the ones that holds the right to MK) are constantly writing drafts (along with the director), which they have to send to Midway (makers of the game)
so the creator of the game (Ed Boon) adds notes and some input to the draft, then to the studio (rumored to be Lionsgate at this moment).

Another part of the hold up was waiting for the contract with New Line Cinema to expire. Threshold, the group working on the next movie, was pissed at how New Line handled Annihilation, and didn't want to deal with them anymore.

I know it's complete cheese, but I actually really enjoyed the first Mortal Kombat movie, so I'm kind of excited at the prospect of a rebirth of the franchise. The real question, though, is will the new movie include the kick-ass theme song? It had better.
