This escaped my attention last week as I was hypnotized by shiny silvery things at PMA, but it's worth noting: Those subscription discounts XM and Sirius have been promising if their merger is approved are compared with the current combined rates for both services.Xm_logo_15

Sirius CEO Mel Karmazin told Congress last week that a combined XM-Sirius would charge "well below" the $25 you'd have to pay to get both services today. Which nobody does.

Karmazin wouldn't say how much "well below" is, but he seemed OK with the idea of a $10 "discount."

Which means a current Sirius subscriber like me -- who signed up for the service mainly to have a decent jazz station and to time-shift NPR programming -- would pay $3 a month more for a handful of XM channels I don't care about.

Well, maybe a few Brewers games. But I'm still righteously steamed.
