The proposed merger of satellite radio operators XM and Sirius, once an interesting test of regulatory and business principles, has morphed into something of a moral tragedy
with the arrival of Satan himself.
That would be in the form of former Attorney General John Ashcroft, who recently hired himself out to the National Association of Broadcasters to spearhead opposition to the deal.
The Wall Street Journal further reports that Ashcroft earlier offered his services to XM, presumably before he fairly and subjectively concluded that the merger would irreparably harm the marketplace.
XM and Sirius must now no doubt ponder the possibility of fates worse than business failure--Can you say "extraordinary rendition," boys and girls?--if the deal doesn't go down.
