Activision Announces <cite>Call of Duty 4</cite>, N'Gai Not Happy

Activision announced today that the "worldwide reveal" of the latest in its World War II shoot-Nazis series, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, would be unveiled on Saturday, April 28 during the NFL Draft on ESPN.

This sent Newsweek's N'Gai Croal into a self-described "rant" about World War II shoot-Nazis games and the fact that, in his estimation, Activision hasn't been particularly original with their nomenclature:

Now, that's a perfectly fine name for a game...were it not for the fact that in 2005, Electronic Arts released the decidedly non-obscure Battlefield 2: Modern Combat.

We wish that we could say that this comes as surprise, but our expletive-laden initial shock stems solely from the sheer brazenness of Activision's rip-off. After all, we were at the presentation in Santa Monica when [Activision] unveiled its entry into the WWII game space, Call of Duty. A cynical bunch, several of us journalists snickered as to that title's proximity to Electronic Arts' then-category leading Medal of Honor.

The joke at Midway's latest press event, where they unveiled their WWII shooter, was that it was going to be titled "Duty of Publisher."
