At least thirty people were killed and dozens more wounded during a shooting rampage this morning at Virginia Tech. The gruesome tragedy marks the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.
The unidentified shooter opened fire around 7:15 a.m. in a dormitory. Two hours later, he moved across campus into Norris Hall, home to the school's engineering department, where he killed several students in a classroom, according to authorities. The gunman was among the dead this afternoon, and it was unclear whether he had taken his own life or been shot by police.
The incident touched off a campus-wide panic as students ran for their lives, some jumping out of classroom windows. Local and state police swarmed to the scene, along with SWAT teams. By 11 a.m., the shooting had stopped.
