Not to beat the Grindhouse horse to death – although the filmmakers probably would have approved – but has everyone taken a look at the soundtrack to Death Proof yet? I was too busy stuffing my clenched fists into my mouth to pay attention while the movie was playing, but a quick glance at the track list, and a quick listen at Virgin while on my lunch break, shows an eclectic and obscure mix of classic seventies music – from bump’n’grind Staggolee to bubbly pop April March.
Soundtracks have come a long way from Grease and West Side Story. As The 88 knows, they’re one of the best ways for obscure bands to reach the ears of hundreds of thousands of listeners. Others worth mentioning, in case you haven’t seen the movie: Lost Highway, Marie Antoinette, and my personal favorite – the Powerpuff Girls!
