Bethesda has bought the rights to the Fallout franchise from Interplay, which, when we cut to the chase, means that we likely won't have our *Fallout *MMO for four years or so. Here's how it works: Interplay had originally given Bethesda permission to produce sequels to the series (and feel free to give us Fallout 3 with the quickness, guys), but kept the rights to the MMO for themselves. Now, after $5.75 million exchanged hands between friends, Beth owns the whole kit and kaboodle.

Bethesda will license the MMO rights to Interplay, provided that they a) get $30 million in backing and start work on the game in the next two years, and b) launch within four years after development begins. So we've got a bit of a wait coming, folks. Will we even still want to play MMOs four years from now?
