Satellite radio sweethearts XM and Sirius really ought to thank the National Association of Broadcasters.
As part of the rationale for their proposed merger, the companies posit that their competition consists of much more than satellite radio. Anti-merger tactics employed by the NAB keep bolstering their case.
Besides hiring Dr. Evil to spearhead merger opposition and filing numerous complaints with the FCC, the Consumer Coalition for Competition in Satellite Radio (C3SR), a supposed grass-roots band of outraged consumers, turns out to basically be a front for the NAB.
The newshounds at Corporate Crime Reporter found links between C3SR and the main law firm employed by the NAB, plus vague disclosures that the organization "supports" C3SR. Asked to detail the extent and nature of that support, C3SR founder Chris Reale declined with this "don't wanna" explanation: "If we were out there in the media telling people who funded us, it would detract from support from different groups. I didn’t think that was a wise course."
