For the first time in nearly a century, and just days after a condor egg was found in Mexican cliffs where the great bird was thought to have disappeared, a California condor was seen flying over San Diego.

The female bird flew from a condor release site in the Sierra San Pedro de Martir National Park in Baja California, Mexico, north along the Sierra Juarez mountain ridge and into the United States on Wednesday, according to the Zoological Society of San Diego.

The bird is a captive-bred animal that was released with several others in Mexico in 2002 as part of a California condor recovery program.

San Diego County's last documented California condor sighting was in 1910. The bird was once widespread, swooping above the western United States, parts of Canada and Baja California.
