China's National Development and Reform Commission, the main government body pushing economic development, has given the OK for four more China-based consumer electronics companies to start making handsets, further crowding an already packed market.
The new entrants mean close to 85 phone makers are now vying for the loyalty of Chinese consumers, setting the stage for a Spartacus-like battle of attrition that some analysts predict will only leave about a dozen companies still standing a few years from now.
Further speculation says that any company hardy enough to survive the battle for the China market has a good shot at becoming a worldwide player.
Says financial analyst David Wolf:
