Flash-based MP3 players and cellphones will be able to carry a lot more music starting this fall, when devices using Toshiba's recently-announced 16GB flash memory chip go on sale. How did they pull this off? By cramming 8 2GB flash elements onto a chip that's about the same size as current flash memory chips. That doesn't slow down transfer speeds though; you'll be able to copy songs onto the memory at 6 MB/sec, with a 15 MB/sec read speed.

Apple has used Toshiba memory on certain models of the iPod Nano, and another of its suppliers, Samsung, has also announced a 16GB flash chip. Whichever one Apple goes with, an ultraslim 16GB iPod could be available by the next holiday season.
