Britain, for all its myriad flaws and faults, has at least lifted a perfidious and foppish hand to let the environment eat some cake, which is more than certain other western governments have done. Joining its 10%-of-power-from-wind-turbines-by-2010 initiative comes now comes fancy LCD energy meters.

The intent is to let folks monitor the power they use, with the system somehow tracking usage by appliance (presumably this is for new homes, with old ones simply getting tracked by fuse breaker) and offering up all sorts of fancy displays. Knowing my homeland, these will be accompanied by CCTV cameras and a speaker from which a stern, sexless female voice can bark orders.

Proponents hope to see home energy bills cut by seven percent.
