"The damage and destruction suffered by the monuments on the Sacred Rock, over the centuries, is due to both natural and, primarily, human agents and interventions. Atmospheric pollution has caused the deterioration of the surface of the marble, while shortcomings and errors in earlier restorations have created serious structural problems.
