Dean Kamen's FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) robot competition, a kind of jeux sans frontiers for machines, is done, and we have the winners: Bobcat Robotics of Connecticut, Highrollers from Nevada and Gompei and the HERD from Massachussets.
The tournament saw entrants from 23 countries, with each team given 6 weeks to hone their designs.
Created by Segway inventor Dean Kamen, the tournament tasked youngsters with the construction of remote-controlled 'bots able to accomplish a specific challenge. In this case, the game was named "Rack 'n' Roll," and robots had to first place inner tubes on the rack, both by themselves and while under human control.
