Welcome again to Japan, where the ultraportable VAIO G1 is now optionally fitted with 32GB of flash storage. At 1.9 pounds, the 12-incher loses a few decibels and write speed performance, and gains a few minutes of battery life.

They're charging $545 for the flash drive upgrade. I can't quite see that passing muster in the west, where ultraportables are still a difficult sell.

It's worth pointing out that it's not just the number "545" which is a problem, but also the number "32." We're at an odd point now with flash-vs.-spinning where the capacity numbers are in the same ballpark, but only one of the two technologies is heading to terabit land anytime soon.

Suffice to say, it's not the one that Sony's selling for $17 a Gigabyte.
