That and other fascinating details are included in a new Nielsen survey of next-gen DVD sales, commissioned by Sony and not necessarily intended for public consumption.

The document shows Blu-ray outselling Toshiba's rival HD-DVD format by a substantial margin this year -- year-to date sales of 550,000 units vs. 250,000, respectively. And a couple of titles -- "Casino Royale," "The Departed", "Talladega Nights'' -- have been bonafide hits.

But more telling is the big list of all next-gen DVD releases, which includes dozens of titles that have yet to reach unit sales in the four digits after months of availability. And we're not talking obscure travel documentaries but major releases such as "Windtalkers" (166 units) and "Scooby-Doo" (about 300 units in each format.)
