By combining X-ray images of an abandoned painting hidden beneath a completed Picasso, right, with analysis of sub-surface pigments seen through cracks in the final composition, a "nearly complete" recreation of the original painting is revealed, left.

The concealed image is revealed at the SFMoma's Koret Visitor Education Center in San Francisco. THeir website details how it was discovered:

In 1997, a conservator at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., made x-ray images of several painting by Pablo Picasso, including "Street Scene" (1900). ... the conservation team knew theyt had found something highly unusual.
