The traveler's pipe dream — the ability to travel across 3/4ths of the globe, from the bottom of Chile to the top of Canada, down through Russia, into Asia, dipping into Europe, then down the Middle East to the bottom of Africa • is finally within reach:
The idea of a tunnel under the Bering Strait is a century old. I can only imagine the alternate Cold War that would have resulted if there'd been a route directly to Russia from the US, or the alternate World War III that might have broken out, with the front line being the suboceanic defense of the 65 mile long tunnel.
