The UK Home Office plans to upgrade the country's CCTV network to use higher quality cameras. This could be an expensive operation, as there are five million of them. Graeme Gerrard, a deputy chief constable, said somewhat chillingly of the camera network: "All those who don't conform would have to change". Shiver.
The reason, as ever, is terrorism. But how exactly do you spot a terrorist? What does one look like? According to the Telegraph, technology is the answer. The police want to use "[...] smart cameras that can automatically identify people and analyse their behavior."
We all know how poor technology can be in helping to catch criminals. The effect is always a lessening of freedom for the majority. Maybe it's time to move out.
