Could the winner of the console war be decided by Wal-Mart? Digital Trends reports that the world's most popular slash hated big-box retailer has contracted with Taiwanese maker Fuh Yuan to produce a sub-$300 HD-DVD player for this holiday season.
Yes, of course Wal-Mart can do this. Wal-Mart created the Deer Hunter video games. They can do anything. This comes after news that Sony has sold the millionth Blu-Ray disc. Buoyed by PlayStation 3 sales (which make up 95% of installed Blu-Ray players), Sony's format has outpaced the competition in the next-gen movie wars.
But if Wal-Mart decides to throw its weight behind HD-DVD and not Blu-Ray, could that affect Sony's ability to push Blu-Ray with PS3? Certainly it will not be a trivial thing, and might bring install bases back into parity. I'll be very interested in watching this story as it develops. If HD-DVD can hit a mass market price this Christmas, Sony's early advantage could be for naught.
