Not to be outdone by both cable and DSL, DirecTV announced yesterday that they are looking into offering broadband connectivity through the electrical grid. "We think it would be a good thing to have a third, a fourth or a fifth entrant in broadband," said Chief Executive Chase Carey, "and if we can be helpful in pushing that forward and if there's an opportunity for us to intelligently invest in doing so, we would."

With DirecTV leaving the icy grip of News Corp. and falling into Liberty Media's lap, this may be the best time for DirecTV's transition into the broadband business. Of course, it also helps that Liberty has close ties to Current Group, who specializes in broadband-through-powerline technology.

So, it looks like we're going to be up to our ears in competing high-speed internet/content providers soon. And with rumors floating around that AT&T might purchase another satellite operator (EchoStar), I'm sure the fight for the best all-in-one content provider is far from over. If this means a more stimulated and competitive market, then let the games begin.
