DirecTV is a planning to test internet over power-lines in in a major US city this year, in their latest foray into the land of broadband.
The trouble with satellite services is that they are great at sending lots of bandwidth down, but not so good on the up. Sometimes satellite internet is the only option if you live out in the wilds, but having to connect to old-fashioned dial-up to actually upload anything gets old fast.
As the lines between internet access and content provision blur, the phone, cable and satellite operators are getting closer and closer in their offerings. DirecTV chief executive Chase Carey says that they are already looking other ways to bring broadband to the home, including Wi-Max, but this latest scheme will see them testing in a "top 50 city where you're covering at least half the city."
It makes sense. Later this year DirecTV will be owned by Liberty Media Holding Corp, who also own shares in Current Group, who provide broadband over power-lines.
