Console hacking supremo Ben Heck, in turning his mind to portable emulation, attacks a holy grail of mobile gaming: fitting entire systems of old into a usable, pocketable form. With his Gameport design prototype heading for mass-production, we might finally see something that's worth playing.
Currently, the best solutions involve compromise: the PSP would be perfect, were it not for Sony's incomprehensible and relentless attempts to control every detail of how you use it. Most phones aren't right for the job, either, though there have been amusing attempts.
The Gameport, however, is designed to suit its purpose, though plans indicate it'll only be good for classic 8-bit home systems such as the NES, Atari 2600 and Colecovision. There are some fascinating inclusions on the list: the Amstrad CPC, for example, and Japan's MSX.
I'd like this with a chunkier chip and an SD card slot, however, ready for MAME. I'm such a complainer.
