The May update to Xbox Live is available--by now many of you have already likely downloaded it. (Make note: it's being made available in a rollout scenario, which means not everybody will get it at once. If you don't have access to it yet, you will.)

This update is the one that includes the Live Messenger integration, so dig up a spare USB keyboard and plug it into your 360--using the onscreen keyboard is just too much of a drag. The update also includes achievement pop-ups that show both the name and the value of the achievement you've just earned, which is especially nice for when you accidentally earn one of those "secret" ones.

There's also a tweak that allows your 360 to turn off when it's done downloading. The way it works is you queue up your downloads, then turn your console "off"--in reality simply send it into a low-power mode--when the download is complete, it switches off for reals.

Some people are apparently having difficulty getting the Instant Messaging to work, or at least to work to their liking. If you take it for a test drive, let us know how easy (or not) it is to use.
