Nokia's newest phones aren't greedy with electricity, feasting instead on the rage that will result when they start bleating incessantly after receiving a full charge from the socket. The makers claim that the move could save enough power to run 85,000 homes for a year, and will eventually roll out the feature across their entire line.

Kirsi Sormunen, Vice-President of Environmental Affairs at Nokia said, "Around two-thirds of the energy used by a mobile phone is lost when it is unplugged after charging but the charger itself is left in a live socket.

The first models to feature "unplug me" alerts are the Nokia 1200 (pictured), 1208 and 1650, unpleasant mass-market units intended for China and Latin America. The goal is a worthy one, but this is a cheap, kludgey way to get to it. Instead, they should make the phone and charger more efficient, by not continuing to waste electricity when charged.
