There's still over 24 hours to go before the Square Enix press conference, but a fan site purports to have leaks of some of the unveilings -- including a fully 3D remake of Final Fantasy IV for Nintendo DS. The group in charge of the recent Final Fantasy III remake on DS is running this show as well.
If true, I have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, this would be one of the most egregious examples of dead-horse beating that Square Enix has ever engaged in, and considering who we're talking about that is really saying something. Final Fantasy IV was just released on Game Boy about a year and a half ago, and now they want people to buy it yet again?
On the other hand, I am a huge Final Fantasy IV nerd and have bought every single version of the game. I think I own something on the order of nine copies of this game already on four different platforms, and I will buy this on day one and become highly addicted to it.
Other rumors on the site include Final Fantasy XII International Edition, which like previous re-releases will be Japan-only and be released on August 9. Besides adding the English-language voiceovers, this revamped version will contain some kind of new job system based on the 12 signs of the zodiac. 6,800 yen.
The site also claims to have the first details on Dissidia Final Fantasy, which was announced yesterday. Apparently it'll be the game that celebrates all 20 years of Final Fantasy history, by bringing characters together from every past Final Fantasy game to wage war. The genre is "war action," which brings to mind something like Dynasty Warriors. Battles will take place on a 3D field in real time.
Also, apparently if you purchase something at the Square Enix Party this weekend, you'll get a CD featuring six tracks from the cell phone game Final Fantasy VII Before Crisis. Oh, and FFVII Crisis Core is set for a fall release in Japan.
Anyway, take this all with a grain of salt! There's an excellent chance that I just wasted fifteen minutes transcribing a bunch of stuff that some bored guy made up out of thin air to try and trick stupid gaijin.
