The Aphrodite Project has come up with a brilliant strategy for empowering the modern urban sex worker: geo-aware footwear. The project, led by Norene Leddy, promotes safatey among ladies (and, presumably, men) working the streets by implating these stylish platform heels with emergency alarms as well as a GPS locator. From the Aphrodite site:
Since cops and hookers traditionally don't get along so well, the alarm signal will go out not to the police, but to the local sex workers' rights group. Such groups already exist in New York, Los Angeles and a few other spots in the world.
The shoes can also connect to the Rave Wireless emergency network that's popular on college campuses. Rave lets students send out an emergency signal on their mobile phones when they're in danger. The phone is instantly located via radio traingulation and the authorities are alerted.
