With the word "iPod" now used as a generic term for "portable music player" by Reuters (which surely makes Apple's trademark guys nervous), rivals are becoming increasingly inventive and weird in the alternatives they come up with. Creative's latest Zen is the "Stone," which looks like a giant-sized version of one of those disgusting bitter-licorice candies you can get in Scandinavia and England.

Technically, the thing just plays music. It's like the Shuffle: cheap, small, just works. The design, however, is a blobby black Avignon to Apple's sleek white Rome.
