Some Macs haven't taken kindly to last week's Operating System update, Mac OS X 10.4.10. Several forums have reports of popping sounds coming from machines after the update was applied. Dubbed Snap, Crackle, Pop, the issue affects Mac portable and also the Mac Mini.
It's thought that the pop is caused by the audio chip going into power saving mode, which should only happen when using battery power. Trouble is, it's happening on desktop machines an notebooks plugged in to AC power. The problem could be called 'intermittent' (translation: never happens when you take it in for repair), either happening just before playing audio, or constantly cycling every minute or so.
So go carefully, Mac users. And if you do get this problem, enterprising forum member Tony Piper has whipped up a little application which loops a four second silent MP3 file. It's called Pop Stop, and apparently does the trick.
