BusinessWeek claims that "two sources," both unfortunately born without names, have revealed Apple plans to have 3 million iPhones ready for day 1. This is remarkable: just two days ago we were going to have a "frenzy" caused by shortages of 40 phones or less per store.
Now, unless there are 75,000 Apple and AT&T stores, something doesn't add up. Ok, so it does add up: we've leapt from enthusiastic boosterism to the propogation of paradoxical truths: the configuration of reality is immaterial to Apple's success.
One thing that interests me is the related claim that Apple will deliberately limit availability, and oh-how horrid-it-is for doing so. This is the "Evil Nintendo Deprives World of Wiis" argument. But what's evil about it? Ferrari has capped production for years, and it's what makes Ferrari the magic car. Do you think any less of the F because it doesn't make a $50k roadster to compete with Porsche and Lotus for the everyday bachelor? No, the Mondial does not count. The part about iPhone that doesn't add up is that, like the PlayStation 3, they're trying to sell Enzos like Corollas.
