"Digital technology has become a medium that has redefined the arts, broadening horizons and changing both the practice and the production of countless disciplines including graphic design, photography, architecture, industrial design, and jewelry and metalsmithing. The practice of Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) presents boundless opportunities and important questions for the professionals and educators in our field. What are the implications of digital technologies, and how are the designers, craftspersons, and educators addressing them? Virtual | Tangible examines the work of a new generation of artists and educators in addition to the established members of the community who have adopted and pioneered the digital as a means of reinterpreting, designing, and making the tangible objects of our discipline.
"We recognize both virtual and tangible works by artists and designers implementing digital technologies into the studio practice. We examine the past four decades to document the advancements of digital applications, from the earliest appropriation of digital devices to the most recent generation of CAD/CAM. In our efforts to rationally create a historical context within which we considered the evolution of this medium at a time when significant new ground is being broken throughout the world, and to demonstrate the digital influence on the jewelry and metalsmithing disciplines. From design conceptualization to production, from the one-of-a-kind piece to the mass-produced, we explore the achievements and potential in the digital medium...."
