During today's shareholder call, EA's CEO John Riccitiello indicated that the company feels a little threatened by Take Two's All Pro Football 2K8, which skirted EA's monopoly on the NFL license by using retired players:

When you've got a competitor like Take-Two on the sports side, and they launch a football title using some of the industry legends, you want to make sure that ends up being a blip and is not repeatable, because we like to defend our franchises aggressively.

What this "aggressive" defense might entail is anybody's guess, but it will likely involve lots and lots of money.
