A shell essentially gives access to the underlying Unix layer of the iPhone, and according to member 'ghex': ...it means you have complete administrative access to all the files inside the iphone. This is the first step into tinkering with the applications inside the iphone to make it do whatever you want, including writing a code to make the phone truly unlocked.

Using the iPhoneInterface application, forum members have successfully enabled a shell on the iPhone. A shell essentially gives access to the underlying Unix layer of the iPhone, and according to member 'ghex':

To do this yourself, you'll need to make an iPhone to serial cable, but if you are a confident solderer it will be easy, requiring few components (detailed in the forum thread). This after only a week. It can't be long before somebody installs Linux on this thing.
