Shhh 1Ned Ludd would be proud. Residents of Slocan Valley in British Columbia want to use the cellphone-free status of the area to attract tourists and residents seeking some peace and quiet.

We hear about protests against cellphone towers all the time, but usually they are of the "won't you please think about the children" kind. The Slocan Valley residents aren't worried about radiation though – they want to be "able to enjoy life without the incessant sound of ringtones, immediately followed by someone's shouted conversation", according to Slocan Valley Economic Development Commission member Bill Roberts.

A new tower is planned in the nearby town of New Denver, but if protests are successful, the valley plans to make its cellphone free status a selling point. We can se it now: "Slocan Valley, twinned with Silent Hill".
