At least one iPhone can make calls via Australia's Telstra, following the owner's successful attempt to activate his iPhone on its cellular network. The registration was completed after user "Obzimmer" fixed the default SIM card so that it was recognized as an AT&T card, but otherwise behaved like a Telstra one.
The OSX iPhone network-free activator utility, iActivator, was used to get the job done. There was a video on YouTube of the hacked iPhone, but it's no longer available, having been "removed by the user." Following are the alleged, obviously incomplete insturctions, as posted at TechGate. Somewhat baffling, this stuff is clearly not for the average Joe.
