My Mom on the Console Wars

Segments like this one on The Today Show aren't aimed at you and me, they're aimed at folks with a limited knowledge of gaming, hoping to give them the info they need to make an educated decision. So what would someone like that learn from watching today's broadcast? I asked Game|Life's newest industry analyst: my mom.

Mom's a loyal Today Show viewer who, despite my best efforts, only pays scant attention to the world of gaming. Her exposure to the current big three consoles consists of two games of Wii Bowling. The first time, she beat me. The second time, she kicked my ass. Want to know where she first heard about it? Yep, you guessed it: on The Today Show.

After watching the segment, here's what she thinks about the 360:

Something is wrong with the Xbox 360. I would not wish to buy an Xbox 360, because obviously something is wrong with it. They're giving you an extra two years on the warranty, but not calling it a recall.

And the Wii?

They didn't say much about the Wii. They didn't show how much fun it could be. But for people who want to chase goblins and things, I don't even know if that's on the Wii. Whenever they show the
Wii, they always just show the active things. They seem to be pushing
Nintendo.

What about the PS3?

If I were to pick out one just from what I saw there, I might have a tendency to lean towards the PS3 because of the Bluetooth, but I've played the Wii and I think the Wii is more fun. (She means
Blu-ray, of course, but when you're not overly tech-savvy, it's easy to see how you might mix the two up.)

Now, some folks are going to know more than my mom, and obviously there are more sources of information out there than just The Today Show, but it's interesting insight into how the "other 90%" views things, just the same. We'll have more analysis from mom in the days to come.
