Sony and The Nielsen Company--the TV ratings people--have announced a plan to develop a measurement system for game network advertising. Sony will provide traffic data from the Playstation Network and Home and Nielsen will crunch the numbers.
Starting this fall, Nielsen will begin monthly reports on audience statistics and user activity from across the Playstation Network. This will (eventually) help calculate the reach, frequency, and effectiveness of game network advertising.
Nielsen is also working with Sony to compile server data that will improve Sony's capabilities to "deliver the right ad to the right person at the right time across Playstation Network." I'm sure it's not meant to sound quite that Big Brothery.
This month, Nielsen's GamePlay Metrics will provide metered game play usage and demographic information by game title, genre, and platform...TV ratings for video games, basically.
