This concept design from UK industrial designer Jack Godfrey Wood is an incredibly good idea. The "house-off" switch does just what it says. Hook it up by the front door and you can kill all power to your home when you leave. A second version leaves any number of "safe sockets" live, so you can leave the Tivo running while you head down to Blockbuster.
According to Nokia, leaving your cellphone charger plugged in when not in use triples energy use. Add to that all the other junk that quietly sucks power in the background and you start to realize a Big Switchoff might just save some cash, as well as the planet.
