Microsoft's HD Photo file format, originally floated as a replacement for the array of mutually incompatible RAW formats confounding high-end camera owners, now is starting to shape up as a sequel to the far more ubiquitous JPEG standard. The Joint Photographic Expert Group, keeper of the JPEG format, is considering a proposal to standardize HD Photo and recognize it as a variation on JPEG, dubbed "JPEG XR."

Main obstacle seems to be mass-market camera makers, who would rather keep you tied to their proprietary flavors of RAW.
