We've covered aerogel before, but really, any excuse to take another look at this amazing ... stuff ... will do. The bizarre, ultra-light material, comprised almost entirely of air, is solid enough to resist explosions, thousand-degree heat, and temptation. Scientists believe it will ultimately filter into everyday life as a kind of universal super-stuff, but finding real-life applications remains a challenge, perhaps due to the expense of making it. The London Times quotes Mercouri Kanatzidis, a chemistry professor at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois:
Created by dehydrogenating silica gel and replacing the lost water with gas, other touted applications range from future spacesuits and fuel cell composites to bricks and beds. Me, I would make a hat. What would you do with it?
