Connections Solo Detail-1

Sling launches the new Sling Solo today, and look at the feast of connections it provides. The new place-shifting box sits in the middle of Sling's lineup and is expected to be the most popular model. So what do you get? First up, a shiny black box. More important: HD. The Solo supports up to 1080i from a cable box (regular or digital), DVR, satellite receiver or Apple TV.

When you're out and about, you can actually take direct control of the boxes at home, so you can change channels on the TV, say, and pipe the show over the internet to your computer or mobile device. The new Solo also supports component in. That USB port is still a mystery, though. We're not sure if it will hook up to an external drive, but we sure hope so. And the spec sheet has a rather cryptic message contained within. The router requirement is listed as "wired or wireless". That could mean a wireless Sling. Or it could just be that all WiFi routers have ethernet anyway.

Available now (although shown as "out of stock"), from $180.
